Summer Program Course Descriptions
Academic Enrichment
Art Studio - Rising 7th, 8th and 9th grade students
Art Studio will have students working with mixed media as they create one or more works of original art. In the process they will discover the essentials of being a good artist and will engage in peer critiques.
Engineering Lab - Rising 7th, 8th and 9th grade students
Engineering students will build and program robots, design objects using computer-aided design (CAD) software for 3D printing, Fly drones, and work as part of an engineering team to solve problems.
Model UN Symposium - Rising 7th, 8th and 9th grade students
In the Model UN Symposium, students will develop position papers, research a selected country to represent, and develop effective presentation and consensus-building skills as they learn how to be a Model United Nations delegate.
Music Conservatory - Rising 7th, 8th and 9th grade students
In our Music Conservatory course, students will hone their performance skills while they work towards a performance on the final day of class. In the process, they will receive training in the fundamentals of performance.
ND English Prep - Rising 9th grade students
In the ND English Prep course, students will be introduced to high school writing and reading as they write an essay during the week that will receive teacher feedback. They will also work on completing their ND freshman summer reading requirement.
ND Math Prep - Rising 9th grade students
In the ND Math Prep course, students will strengthen their Pre-Algebra skills and focus on developing the skills necessary to succeed in Algebra I at the high school level. Students will take a diagnostic test to determine areas that need to be addressed at the beginning of the course.
Acceleration
This workshop will allow rising senior IB students the opportunity to research, write, edit, and polish their IB extended essays. Students will receive feedback on completed work and will be given samples of model essays to review.
This course is intended for the gifted mathematics student. The geometry portion of the course teaches the use of logical skills with special attention to deduction and induction. The topics covered are points, lines, planes, angles, polygons, circles, and arcs. The relationships discussed are congruence, similarity, parallelism, perpendicularity, area, length, distance, and ratio. Algebra applications are integrated into the course through problem-solving. Also included is the study of volumes of solids and coordinate geometry.
The trigonometry portion of the course will focus on trigonometry and how it is applied. Topics include triangle trigonometry, the Unit Circle, radians and degrees, applications of radians, special right triangles, graphing trigonometric functions, the law of sines, and the law of cosines. There will be an introduction to the trigonometric functions as well as inverse trigonometric functions.
Attendance Policy: In order to be successful in this course, all students who register are expected to attend all in-person class meetings and to follow the suggested work schedule provided by the instructor.
Requirements for placement: 95 or above in Algebra II Honors for the year and teacher permission.
SAT Test Prep
The SAT Math course will allow students to learn how to take the SAT effectively by teaching key strategies and approaches to answering math questions. Students will practice taking the test and will be given feedback on areas that need improvement in both approach and content.
The SAT Reading and Writing course will give students an opportunity to learn how to take the SAT effectively by teaching key strategies and approaches to answering the critical reading and writing component questions. Students will practice taking the test and will be given feedback on areas that need improvement in both approach and content.
College Readiness
College Admissions Boot Camp
The College Admissions Boot Camp course will introduce students to the full process of applying for college. Students will learn how to best position themselves for the college admission process. Topics will include crafting a good college list, writing the college essay, developing a resume, and completing the actual application. The financial aid process will also be discussed along with tips on how to search for grants and scholarships.
* This course meets for one week in June and then virtually in August.
