Shafiq abdussabur '85 scholarship


Meet the Benefactor
Shafiq Abdussabur grew up in New Haven. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1985 and went on to attend the University of West Georgia, Charter Oak State College, and the New Haven Police Academy. He is the founder and CEO of Boldminds, LLC and is an author, public speaker, racial profiling consultant, entrepreneur & retired law enforcement officer who’s unique approach and concepts to urban violence prevention and community based policing have been featured nationally. In 2021, he was elected to the New Haven Board of Alders. By establishing this scholarship, Shafiq would like to give back to his alma mater and create opportunities for students who are in need of financial assistance from the New Haven area. His hope is to continue to the tradition of scholarship, leadership, and service that was instilled in him through his Notre Dame education.

Eligibility Requirements
The award is granted annually to incoming students who meet the following criteria:

  • The student identifies as African American; 
  • The student resides in the City of New Haven;
  • The student has significant financial need.

The scholarship provides a $500 award to cover the expenses related to the purchase of a Chromebook and e-textbooks. The award recipient will be notified of their selection by June 1st for the following school year.
